JOB DESCRIPTION

The Eye Van Program (Medical Mobile Eye Care Unit) has an exciting internship/returnship opportunity for someone who is looking to enter the workforce. This opportunity is proudly supported by NOHFC: an agency of the Government of Ontario.

SCOPE AND SUMMARY OF PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES

Under the general supervision of the General Manager, Eye Van, the Coordinator of Marketing, Communications and Community Outreach will support all marketing, communications and community outreach deliverables for the Eye Van.

The main responsibilities of this role include assisting with conceptualizing and writing materials for a wide array of Eye Van marketing, communications and program-related projects; media relations; coordinating events; and fostering positive relationships with community members and stakeholders.

The position entails, but is not limited to the following general responsibilities:

  • Creates a variety of Eye Van-related communications materials
  • including invitations to community special events
  • to engage participants, volunteers, donors and healthcare providers.
  • Distributes PSA information to local media and updates media lists.
  • Organizes local launch events for the 2020 and 2021 Eye Van tour, including securing dates, times, and locations. Works with Eye Van staff to coordinate specific logistics and identifies community support through volunteers and service clubs.
  • Maintains a strong web presence for the Eye Van, regularly updating the website and maintaining a working knowledge of its content management system.
  • Supports the organization of Eye Van reports and healthcare documents.
  • Organizes and coordinates the community volunteer information and inputs volunteer information into the Salesforce online system. Updates information and reports volunteer hours. Responds to inquires as needed.
  • Assumes the role of updating lists for community healthcare and volunteers, and municipal contacts.

Relationships

  • Communicates in a professional manner, both written and orally, at both internal and external levels as required.
  • Liaises with participants, staff and volunteers from all three CNIB organizations (Vision Loss Rehabilitation Canada, CNIB Foundation and CNIB Deafblind Community Services).
  • Works both independently and collaboratively with relevant internal departments.

  • Ability to provide strategic solutions to problems using excellent analytical, problem definition and problem-solving skills
  • Ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously, meeting deadlines and producing high-quality work

Decision Autonomy

Works under the general direction of the General Manager, Eye Van, but has latitude to operate independently on routine tasks in an uncertain environment.

  • Consults with supervisors on issues that are more complex or may require upper level approval.
  • Commits to maintaining privacy and confidentiality.

Leadership

  • Enhances team efforts on a professional level and shares specialized knowledge, sources, experience, concepts and skills.
  • Takes initiative in providing information and assistance to participants regarding programs, and provides administrative support to the office, while working collaboratively with others.
  • Takes initiative to keep abreast of issues related to vision loss and provides strategic advice related to news, new media and communications information

QUALIFICATIONS

To be eligible, the candidate:

Has graduated from an accredited college or university within the last three years.

  • Is legally entitled to work in Canada.

KNOWLEDGE AND SKILL REQUIREMENTS:

  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Detail-oriented with strong organization skills
  • Comfortable working in a high-pressure environment
  • Strong creative and strategic thinking skills with an ability to develop and execute outside-the-box ideas in a fast-paced environment
  • Working knowledge of relevant design, video and audio editing software, including InDesign, Photoshop and Final Cut Pro preferred
  • Strong knowledge of social media best practices
  • Professional attitude, results oriented, self-directed and flexible
  • Demonstrated understanding of and sensitivity to the needs of people living with sight loss and other functional challenges
  • Strong computer skills, with proficiency in MS Office
  • Demonstrated strong initiative, maturity, as well as the ability to work both independently and as part of a team
  • Must be able to travel independently via public transit or car (taxi, Uber, etc.) when necessary
  • French language skills an asset

Experience and Education:

  • Administrative and/or not-for-profit experience an asset
  • University/college graduate in marketing, public relations, journalism, new media, communications or an equivalent combination of education, training and expertise
