POSITION DESCRIPTION
Position: Communications Manager

Scope: The Communications Manager will lead the development of a youth network, manage a
grassroots conversation and the CMIF stakeholder engagement platform. The Communications
Manager will also assist in the development and ongoing management of the Imagine-Marine public
outreach program with special emphasis on building a leading-edge social media campaign to
promote greater awareness of the marine industry and career opportunities.

Languages: Excellent proficiency in English and French (verbal and written).

Employment: Contract position – 2 to 2.5 days per week with possibility for full-time employment.

Location: Office facilities available in Ottawa or Montréal with flexibility to work remotely.

RESPONSIBILITIES
Stakeholder Relations

  • Create and strengthen relationships with a broad range of marine industry stakeholders
    seeking opportunities to collaborate on communication initiatives that promote greater
    awareness of the industry and career opportunities.
  • Maintain open and positive relations with CMIF member communications specialists to share
    information and ensure consistent industry messaging.
  • Act as liaison with internal and external stakeholders to exchange information, develop
    program content and coordinate activities.

Website

  • Work with suppliers to develop and maintain website(s) for posting of industry information,
    key messages, charts and other visual materials, with special section for media.
  • Lead, coordinate and evaluate the CMIF’s web presence, including using SEO strategies to
    promote outreach.

Data Management

  • Maintain stakeholder database.
  • Conduct occasional research on industry issues, facts, and figures.
  • Collect data and reports relevant to communications objectives.

Social Media and Media Monitoring

  • Monitor media, including print articles, web and social media content related to the marine
    industry, providing analyses and tactical recommendations for action.
  • Create, distribute social media content to CMIF audiences that supports the objective of
    the Imagine-Marine outreach program.
  • Verify facts, writing and sharing messages about the industry.
  • Correct misinformation in a timely manner.

Media Relations

  • Produce press releases and media fact sheets.
  • Conduct proactive media outreach and handling media requests.

  • Develop angles for positive news stories.
    Production and Maintenance of Branding Collateral
  • Manage all CMIF messaging.
  • Write and edit copy for all produced materials.
  • Work with graphic designer, providing creative input on printed and electronic materials.
  • Manage CMIF logo and branding policies.
  • Develop and produce presentations.

CANDIDATE PROFILE

Experience:

  • Experience working in a public relations, communications, media relations or marketing communications role.
  • Experience developing and managing organic and paid social media campaigns programs on all social media channels as well as grassroots public relations campaigns.
  • Experience using web, social media and email content management systems, analytics, and reporting tools.
  • Experience in design and production (print, web and multimedia) processes.
  • Experience in project management.
  • Knowledge or work experience in the marine transportation industry or developing a careers awareness campaign would be a definite asset.

Skills:

  • Creativity, and the ability to inspire youth.
  • Willingness to develop a youth movement.
  • Excellent writing and editing skills are mandatory requirements, especially the ability to adapt techniques and styles across media, e.g., from print to web to social media, while maintaining consistent brand messaging.
  • Proficiency communicating with various target audiences (demographics) is essential, including dialoging with new contacts and visitors.
  • General ability and/or understanding of graphic design, layout and project coordination are important considerations.
  • Comfort level producing high-quality, meaningful content on tight deadline is vital.
  • The successful candidate will be curious, a fast learner, logical and organized, and have the ability to work both with minimum supervision and as part of a team.

Education:

Hold a bachelor’s degree from a recognized university in a field relevant to marketing and/or communications; and/or administration, commerce, education or other field relevant to consumer education (or an equivalent combination of experience and training in a related field).
