Reporting to the Manager, Information Architecture, this software developer role will participate in development projects and work closely with the IT Applications and Development team to provide software solutions. The Software Developer I will implement and maintain software programs in support of business and educational delivery needs at CNC. The software developer I assists in the upkeep of the catalogue of custom developed and third-party software to maintain high business value, ensure information security, and to ensure interoperability between various systems.

Specific Duties
  • Builds software modules in support of development projects, in alignment with specifications created by the Software Developer II.
  • Designs web, desktop and console applications in support of business and educational delivery requirements and in alignment with IT Services architectural goals.
  • Writes efficient and maintainable code, markup and queries to build software applications.
  • Tests and troubleshoots software applications to ensure they fulfil the specified requirements.
  • Trains users on newly developed software.
  • Provides database design, implementation and maintenance.
  • Acts as an IT Services representative on interdepartmental software projects.
  • Assists with software procurement exercises, providing recommendations on functionality and interoperability with existing CNC systems.
  • Identifies areas for improvement within existing programs and subsequently implements those improvements.
  • Ensures the confidentiality, security, and stewardship of data, including compliance with freedom of information and protection of privacy legislation.
  • Manages and curates CNC software code repository ensuring that documentation, versioning and changes are managed according to best practices.
  • Advises on the development of IT Services departmental policies and procedures.
  • Advocates for the use of available information technology to automate and standardize business practices.
  • Represents the College on various internal and external forums and committees as required.
  • Acts as a part of a team actively engaged in contributing to and accomplishing the vision, mission, and goals of the College and in supporting the aspirations and needs of our learners.
  • Promotes a positive work atmosphere by interacting and communicating in a professional manner that demonstrates mutual respect with students and colleagues.
  • Performs other duties as required.

Skills & Qualifications

  • Minimum of a Bachelor's Degree in Computer Science or Software Engineering from a recognized institution or equivalent education and experience.
  • Experience in post-secondary education or the public sector is preferred.
  • Demonstrated commitment to providing a customer-focused approach to service delivery.
  • Experience developing software for Microsoft based systems in a Microsoft environment.
  • Experience using Microsoft development and web tools such as Visual Studio, SQL Server Management Studio, Microsoft Internet Information Server.
  • Experience with ASP.Net, C#, Javascript, CSS, JQuery and Knockout.js.
  • Experience designing, implementing and maintaining .NET web applications.
  • Experience designing, implementing and maintaining MS SQL Server databases.
  • Experience with PowerShell.
  • Ability to work on a team and independently set goals.
  • Ability to prioritize and lead software projects of varying sizes.
  • Ability to work effectively with a wide variety of users in a collaborative environment.
  • Demonstrated high level of responsibility with time management.
  • Demonstrated interpersonal and communication skills, both written and verbal.
  • Demonstrated ability to communicate complex and technical ideas to others in plain language.
