Strathcona Resources Ltd. (?Strathcona?) is a Calgary, Alberta based crude oil and gas production and development company focused on maximizing oil and gas recovery from its low decline, high free cash flow oil and gas resource base. Strathcona's operations, infrastructure and land position are focused in British Columbia, Alberta and Saskatchewan.

Reporting to the Vice President, Corporate, the Manager, Communications leads the development and execution of internal and external communication strategies, ensuring unified, consistent, and positive messages are delivered to all stakeholders in a meaningful way. The Manager, Communications plays a key role in implementing communications strategies to enhance the Strathcona culture.

The Manager, Communications leads one direct report and consulting services and suppliers as required. Collectively, the team is responsible for (i) providing tailored internal communications and supporting internal clients across the organization, while ensuring consistency of corporate messaging, (ii) leading the planning, implementation and evaluation of other corporate communication projects, including the rollout of Strathcona's brand, community investment and stakeholder relations strategies, (iii) actively participating in crisis communications and media-related efforts for the organization.

Essential Functions

Working across functions, this role will lead the Communications team by providing strategic support to a variety of projects being delivered across the business. This includes:

  • Overall Communications Strategy: Contributes to the development and implementation of an overarching company-wide communications strategy to support the company's business goals.
  • Employee Communications: Develops and implements effective employee communication strategies, key messages, tactics and metrics that keep team members well informed, enhance culture and engagement and drive the business priorities and objectives of the teams they support designed to drive employee performance, behaviour and engagement in achieving business goals.
  • Public Relations: Creates and implements public relations activities that are aligned to company values and market positioning. Main point of contact for all PR inquires (media, social media) for Strathcona Resources.
  • Digital Communication Channels: Acts as the channel owner for internal and external digital company-wide channels (intranet, website, social media). This includes developing key strategies to leverage these channels in service of the company's business goals.
  • Crisis Management: Organizes crisis simulation and training for Strathcona Leadership. Develops and updates crisis communications manual. Key member of the crisis response team.
  • Charitable Giving & Sponsorships: Works with non-profits, business leaders and key stakeholders to design and implement a focused strategy ensuring that philanthropic and marketing efforts are aligned with Strathcona's values and objectives. Manages communication activities including reporting and communicating local and corporate initiatives.
  • Issues Management: Proactively manages risks by identifying and prepare issues response based on corporate and industry developments.
  • Leadership: Directly supervises all members of the Communications team, including employee(s) and external consultants as required. Coaches and provides mentorship to team to successfully realize short- and long-term goals and individual personal and professional development goals. Provides constructive and timely performance evaluations and feedback

Education, Experience, and Attributes

  • Seasoned communications generalist with a minimum 10 years' experience, preferably within a corporate communication setting.
  • Degree or diploma in Communications, Public Relations or other related discipline. Equivalencies of experience and education will be considered.
  • Ability to understand and assess complex issues and help translate them into clear messaging
  • Demonstrated leadership skills in working with senior management - acting as a trusted and strategic communications advisor.
  • Exceptional strategic thinking, project/campaign management and execution skills
  • Experience with multiple traditional and non-traditional channel communication and a strong working knowledge of digital communication channels and processes.
  • Highly-motivated and enjoys working as part of a team in a dynamic and entrepreneurial work environment.
  • Proactively develops and maintains strong work relationships - demonstrating a collaborative and consultative approach and superior customer service mindset.
  • Comfortable working in a high-change environment and demonstrates flexibility and an ability to respond easily to shifting priorities.
  • Highest standard of personal ethics and integrity supported by open and honest communication.
  • Professional experience with social media and advanced knowledge of various social tools.
  • Oil and gas experience preferred.
  • A background of familiarity with change and reputation management and/or ESG is an asset.
  • Strong relationship builder; works effectively at all levels of the organization with high influencing skills.
  • Ability to manage multiple projects with competing deadlines simultaneously
  • Demonstrate ability to balance vision and creative thinking with rigor and tactical execution to meet organizational goals.

Work Environment

  • Based at Calgary head office.
  • Predominantly Monday to Friday with the potential for some evenings and weekends related to community investment activities in Calgary and field locations.
  • Some travel may be required to field locations (10-20%).
