POSITION SUMMARY:

Reporting to the AVP, Communications, the Communications Manager is responsible for leading a wide range of internal and external communication activities that support ROM's exhibitions, programming and goals. The manager plays a critical role in contributing to the development and execution of strategies, campaign plans, and activities that drive awareness and enhance the organization's reputation. As an experienced and professional communicator, the manager is responsible for providing strategic communications insight and guidance on opportunities and issues as they arise. The manager collaborates with multiple departments to develop and implement integrated communications campaigns that support the Museum's cross-functional initiatives and successfully articulate ROM's story with key audiences, stakeholders, and communities. The role also involves leading internal communication activities that ensure the Museum's strategy, narrative and priorities are amplified and understood across the organization.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Oversees the day-to-day management of the Communications department and the development and execution of the team's external and internal communications strategy.
  • Ensures team members are assigned appropriate workloads, meet deadlines, and have the information, internal contacts, and resources required to execute their work successfully.
  • Set clear priorities to manage expectations and drive successful outcomes.
  • Develop effective strategies and tactics that support attendance and brand awareness goals and contribute to the Museum's favourable organizational profile.
  • Prepares communications plans supporting ROM's leadership team, the Museum's collections, research, exhibitions, events, programming, etc.
  • Writes and edits a variety of compelling communications materials and collateral.
  • Identifies risks and opportunities and provides strategic communications guidance and recommendations.
  • Collaborates on integrated communications campaigns that support cross-functional initiatives and deliver maximum impact and alignment.
  • Receives and solicits input on Museum activities; sets priorities and activates outputs; troubleshoots issues and finds practical solutions to problems.
  • Creates clear strategic briefings and backgrounders to support ROM leadership and spokespersons.
  • Cultivates solid and productive relationships with departments and teams across the Museum.
  • Collaborates with the marketing, social media and publishing teams to ensure consistent and integrated messaging and approaches across all public-facing Museum channels.
  • Assists the AVP, Communications in planning and executing corporate communications activities, including communications plans and collateral.
  • Works across all levels of the organization to deliver on internal communications requirements, including written communications and internal activities.
  • Ensures all media and public queries are addressed promptly and professionally.
  • Monitors the communications budget.
  • Tracks quarterly PR results and presents analysis reports to ROM senior leadership and other stakeholders, as required.
  • Maintains and develops positive relationships with media, partners, and external stakeholder categories.
  • Manages filming requests as assigned.
QUALIFICATIONS:
  • University degree in journalism, communication-related studies, or a comparable equivalent in education and experience.
  • A minimum of five years experience managing teams and communications activities, ideally across multiple disciplines, including internal communications, corporate communications, publicity, and media relations.
  • Considerable experience overseeing the development and implementation of communication plans, campaigns, and ongoing activities, including publicity events, corporate communications, and internal communications.
  • Exceptional strategic and organizational skills, including a proven track record of success in project management, planning, and execution.
  • Must have strong facilitation skills and the ability to meet deadlines and manage multiple activities and stakeholders simultaneously.
  • Exceptional communication skills, both written and oral.
  • Skilled at distilling complex and nuanced information into clear and compelling communications for a wide variety of stakeholders, internal and external.
  • Proven ability to navigate relationships and collaborate across all levels of an organization.
  • Demonstrates astute judgment and strong critical thinking skills.
  • Proven ability to lead by example, work in a fast-paced environment, manage various assignments, resolve issues calmly, quickly, and professionally, and stay focused under pressure.
  • Ability to be resourceful, take initiative, influence decisions and demonstrate resilience in challenging situations.
  • High technical experience with Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint), social media platforms, media monitoring, analysis, and database services.
  • French language proficiency is considered an asset.

SALARY: $88,666 - $104,313

SCHEDULE: 35 hours weekly

PROBATIONARY PERIOD: six (6) months
