Schedule Description

DUTIES

The Graphic Designer's primary duty is to create, promote, and maintain a consistent and audience-appropriate standard of graphic design for all of Open Learning's instructional materials within the approved graphic standards of TRU. The Graphic Designer conceptualizes and develops graphics and graphic designs that are visually engaging and technologically appropriate educational materials.

MAJOR DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Works collaboratively with internal and external stakeholders on graphic design and production in order to create, promote and maintain a consistent standard of graphic design for instructional materials.
  • Applies iterative design, user testing, and collaborative media production expertise to create a variety of deliverables that support Curriculum Media Development Group projects, while adhering to pedagogical principles.
  • Applies current imaging technologies and educational accessibility guidelines in the creation of graphical user interfaces for a variety of educational materials and technologies.
  • Works with the Instructional Design Team and subject matter experts to develop scope documentation, artistic briefs, and graphic specifications to enhance the learning material objectives of educational materials.
  • Completes projects in a wide range of subject matter and program areas within agreed-upon timelines, budgets, and client specifications.
  • Provides graphic design expertise to support structured course development process in XML.
  • Provides status reports for ongoing projects to Curriculum Media Development Group.

QUALIFICATIONS

EDUCATION

  • Grade 12 plus 2 year post secondary diploma in digital or web design

EXPERIENCE

  • 5 years graphic design experience with three of those years focused on web design

SKILLS, KNOWLEDGE AND ABILITIES RELATED TO THE JOB

  • Demonstrated ability to create and maintain a consistent and audience-appropriate standard of graphic design across web, print & multimedia materials
  • Demonstrated ability to apply graphic design skills in the areas of Information Architecture and website usability including the development and documentation of clear navigational structures
  • Demonstrated ability to illustrate and design, particularly addressing the needs of adult learners in a distance-delivery environment and/or in the application of new media and instructional technologies
  • Demonstrated ability to communicate clearly in speaking, writing, and with visual images
  • Ability to formulate new concepts, create visuals, and implement sound graphic design including the production of content for print reproduction, on-line environments &/or other digital delivery methods
  • Ability to coordinate multiple projects with tight deadlines and changing priorities
  • Ability to develop clear instructional material
  • Ability to interact well with colleagues and team members
  • Ability to exercise sound decision making and judgment
  • Ability to organize, coordinate, and attend to fine detail
  • Ability to employ advanced level skills in Adobe Creative Suite (Photoshop, InDesign, Illustrator, Fireworks, Acrobat and Dreamweaver), MS Word, knowledge of Camtasia, HTML, CSS and some programming skills
  • Ability to employ advanced computer skills and knowledge on either a Mac or a PC operating system. Must have the ability to employ basic computer skills on the alternate operating system

  • Ability to lift weights up to 10 kg

The salary for the above position is determined by the Collective Agreement with the Canadian Union of Public Employees, Local 4879, as it presently exists.

Pay Band

CUPE Grade 08 $29.20

Salary rate

Please Note: This position may be subject to a 90% salary for the first 560 hours of employment.
