Salary Range:  (Grade 07) $66,300 - $88,500 (midpoint) $115,100

POSITION SUMMARY: 

Reporting to the Associate Vice-Principal, the incumbent provides professional communications and public relations expertise to promote and present McGill as a great place to work. Fosters long-term relationships and two-way communication with McGill's internal constituencies through various communications initiatives. Provides professional communications and public relations expertise to the AVP and Directors/colleagues in the development and implementation of programs and strategies. Designs and implements short- and long-term communication plans. Writes and edits a variety of print or electronic communications material. Proposes, designs and implements new initiatives in support of the unit’s strategic direction, in light of new developments in the fields of communications, employee relations and public relations. Monitors progress and results. Represents the unit at internal and/or external meetings. Leads the planning and manages the organization of HR events. Performs related duties.

PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES: 

  • Advise senior administrators and other colleagues on how to best achieve various communications goals with respect to internal/external constituencies.
  • Identify communications goals, and build and implement comprehensive communications strategies and messages aimed at achieving them.
  • Anticipate, advise and help to address sensitive issues.
  • Write and edit a wide range of print or electronic communications and oversee distribution across various vehicles
  • Prepare speaking notes for the AVP, and other senior administrators as needed.
  • Lead the planning and manage the organization of HR events
  • Work closely with McGill’s central Communications and External Relations team to help ensure the consistent strategic alignment of messaging across the University, in the joint pursuit of HR and institutional goals.
  • Manage three HR-related websites and an electronic newsletter.
  • Build strong collaborative working relationships with colleagues across the University.
  • Plan and lead communications initiatives for special projects as needed.

MINIMUM EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE: 

  • Undergraduate degree
  • Five (5) years' related experience

Other Qualifying Skills And/Or Abilities: 

  • Eight (8) to ten (10) years’ experience in HR/Institutional Communications preferably in Higher Education.
  • Superior capacity to communicate in English, both in writing and orally. Strong capacity to communicate in French, both in writing and orally.
  • A strategic, structured, goal-oriented approach to communications.
  • Experience developing and implementing comprehensive strategic communication plans for diverse audiences, especially with respect to change management and sensitive issues.
  • Experience in writing a range of communications materials targeted to various audiences.
  • Experience managing numerous communications priorities within a complex organizational structure, negotiating content to accommodate differing internal priorities.
  • Understanding of postsecondary institutions’ organizational structure and governance an asset.
  • Ability to function under pressure and manage tight deadlines.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills and demonstrated ability to build constructive and effective relationships.
  • Discretion, integrity and tact.
  • Proven experience using digital platforms to achieve communications goals
