Development & Communications Co-op Student

Available Opportunities: 1 Temporary Part time, up to 28 hours per week, from September to December 2022

Location: Vancouver (Head Office) - partially remote

Opportunity Summary

The Development & Communications Co-op Student is responsible for aiding in the development and implementation of all Westcoast Family Centres Society communications strategies, stakeholder relations, and donor management. Core responsibilities include: social media, content & design, event management, research and data support.

Job Responsibilities:

Reporting to the Project Coordinator, the Development & Communications Co-op Student will be a key player in the Development team and be responsible for the following functions:

  • Content preparation and design for both internal and external communications including Staff bulletins, Newsletters, Company Website, Brochures etc.
  • Research, develop, and implement new communication strategies to increase community engagement. and overall agency awareness of programs and services.
  • Research, create, manage, and distribute agency promotional material (digital and print).
  • Design and prepare content for social media use.
  • Build and maintain relationships with community partners and stakeholders.
  • Contribute to meetings and event planning.
  • Prepare and write meeting minutes, reports etc.
  • Support in survey data collection, design, distribution, and analysis.
  • Support facilitators with online program and workshop delivery.
  • May be required to support in research new systems and writing of reports and proposals.
  • Any other administrative activities as required including data entry and filing.
  • Provide support to the Development, Communication, and IT Team.
  • Provide support to additional projects / responsibilities/duties as assigned by Director or members of Leadership Team.


  • Full or Part- time student enrolled in an accredited Canadian college or university. pursuing a degree or diploma in Communications, or a related field, and enrolled in a Co-op program
  • Student must be enrolled in post-secondary and
not graduating (or have not completed their program requirements) for the first 30 days of the internship.
  • Students must hold Canadian citizenship, permanent residency, or refugee status.
  • Satisfactory Criminal Record Check.

Skills you Bring:

  • Strong writing/editing and oral/interpersonal communication skills.
  • Ability to multi-task and manage multiple priorities; superior attention to detail.
  • Proficient in a range of computer software programs, particularly Microsoft Office
  • Familiar with CRM, Mailchimp, Survey monkey, Squarespace, Canva, Hootsuite, etc.
  • Adobe InDesign, Illustrator, Photoshop, etc. is a strong asset.

Learning Objectives:

  • Acquire an increased understanding of internal and external communication strategies
  • Develop time management and project coordination skills
  • Develop skills for various online platforms and programs related to marketing, design, and communications
  • Work collaboratively with a small Development & Communications team to meet the needs and goals of other departments within the organization
  • Develop knowledge of the non-profit sector and the key stakeholders involved
