Senior Director, External Communications

We are looking for a confident, collaborative, and strategic communications leader to join Rogers' Communications & ESG team. The Senior Director of External Communications is responsible for promoting and protecting the company's reputation across Canada. As a key member of the Rogers Communications & ESG leadership team, you will lead a team responsible for corporate and financial communications, strategic media relations, narratives and planning, and issues management.

You are an experienced leader and strategic thinker, who thrives in a fast-paced and result-driven environment. You are comfortable advising senior executives and working with them to develop communications strategy and plans. You're also happy to jump in and develop stories, write press releases and statements, manage issues, and brief reporters.

You are a respected people leader, who knows how to empower a team to execute at the highest possible standard and has a passion for growth and development in others. The role will report to the VP of Communications & ESG, and serves as a strategic advisor to the Chief Regulatory and Chief Legal Officers.

Role characteristics

  • Develops and delivers the company's external communications strategy, including corporate and financial communications, policy and regulatory communications, issues and crisis management.
  • Works in partnership with communications leaders across each of Rogers lines of business to deliver a pipeline of announcements that help tell the Rogers story and supports business objectives.
  • Oversees Rogers media relations activities, providing strategic advice on media strategy, counsel on issues and threats facing the business, and identifying opportunities that will drive positive media coverage for Rogers across Canada.
  • Provides strategic communications counsel to executives and help develop and deliver their communications platform, including messaging, speeches, media interviews, presentations, and social media presence.
  • Oversee and coordinate crisis communications, and help lead the company's response across a broad range of issues, including customer service challenges, network outages, privacy matters, cyber security, and regulatory changes.
  • Manage the editorial and platform team to deliver compelling and data-driven editorial content to our primary audiences that improves brand reputation and drives interest and engagement.
  • Partner with public policy and regulatory teams to manage government and regulatory issues and develop and deliver a communications strategy that helps influence politicians, political advisors, and regulators.
  • Monitor and evaluate the impact of communications campaigns and use analytics tools to measure success, identify opportunities, track issues, and inform communications strategy.
  • Build trusted, collaborative relationships and an excellent internal network and external stakeholder relationships to inform communications strategy, company initiatives, and enable the successful execution of our strategy.
  • Oversee the appointment and management of agencies, content providers, and other suppliers.


  • 14+ years experience in corporate communications with experience in media relations, issues management, social media/digital communications, public company communications, preferably in a highly regulated industry.
  • Results-driven, creative and collaborative team member who thrives in a fast-paced environment.
  • Experience leading large teams with proven experience in systematic team governance and performance management.
  • Expert communication skills (verbal/written/presentation); capable of distilling complex information into simple key messages.
  • Expert strategic thinking skills and judgement with in-depth project management skills.
  • Extensive experience providing strategic counsel to senior executives.
  • Bilingual (English/French) an asset.
  • Proven ability to recognize impactful policy trends translating those insights into actionable ideas into a cohesive communications strategy.
