Co-op Position: SGS/ORIS Communications & Public Affairs Assistant (Public Relations Assistant )

Position Details

The University of Lethbridge, School of Graduate Studies and Office of Research and Innovation Services invites applications from students registered for co-operative education for a full-time, Limited Term Communications & Public Affairs Assistant position to commence work September 1, 2022 for a term ending preferably either August 31, 2023 or December 31, 2023. Applications for terms ending April 30, 2023 may also be considered.

Faculty members and students at ULethbridge are engaged in many important and exciting research projects and professional development opportunities at the University of Lethbridge. The primary goals of the Communications & Public Affairs position are to: a) promote faculty and student research, creative activities, and commercialization; and b) to promote the School of Graduate Studies and graduate student activities both internally and externally.

Faculty members and students at uLethbridge are engaged in important and exciting research and professional development opportunities. Promoting and highlighting this work and making it accessible to current and prospective students, university community members and supporters is key to ensuring the continued success of the University of Lethbridge.

In this role the successful candidate will:

  • Create and develop content for social media outlets, newsletters, websites, and other items.
  • Manage the social media channels for the School of Graduate Studies and the Office of Research and Innovation Services.
  • Draft communications related to news releases, fact sheets, and other materials.
  • Research and organize information for use in marketing projects.
  • Assist with updating and maintaining websites for SGS and ORIS.
  • Coordinate and communicate research projects and related funding/grants with current and prospective graduate students, as well as faculty members.
  • Coordinate and prepare blog posts about graduate students' and faculty members' research.
  • Develop a diverse repository of images, short videos (30-45 seconds), and stories that profile a broad spectrum of student and faculty member research, as well as professional development opportunities at uLethbridge.
  • Provide administrative, graphics, and production support for marketing materials.
  • Advise both SGS and ORIS offices on general communications approaches and preparation of communications plans.
  • Other duties, as assigned.

From time to time, this position will be required to work in the evenings and on weekends.

AUPE Grade 8: $3,909 - $4,788 monthly (position classification currently under review)

Position Qualifications

The successful candidate must be eligible for a co-op placement as part of their program of study. Students in graduate-level programs are preferred.

Education: An undergraduate degree is preferred with post-secondary education in a relevant field.

Skills: The ideal candidate will:

  • Must be a senior undergraduate student or graduate student. Note that this is a co-op position, so the student must be in a program that permits this.
  • Be familiar with a variety of social media platforms and management tools.
  • Possess excellent interpersonal, oral, and written communication skills.
  • Have strong organizational and project management skills, with the ability to work both independently and collaboratively with a variety of stakeholders.
  • Have an ability to prioritize tasks and focus on multiple projects and deadlines simultaneously.
  • Have excellent computer skills, including knowledge of social media.
  • Be creative, some graphic design experience would be an asset.
  • Ability to use a camera and any experience taking pictures and shooting/editing video would be an asset
  • Have a strong passion for research and professional development and its impact on the student experience
  • Experience with digital marketing would be an asset
