Job Summary

The Web Developer reports to the Manager, Digital Strategy of Marketing & Communications and works closely with project managers, Information Technology, strategists, and design team members to create dynamic and engaging websites. This position is responsible for supporting the existing infrastructure, developing innovative, reusable web-based tools for progressive online community building. The incumbent works within a varied, fast-paced environment and website development, CMS administration, and integration are all elements of this position.

Job Duties/Responsibilities

  • Responsible for the operational administration, growth, and development of the college's websites and CMS (Content Management Systems).
  • Works closely with other team members in Marketing & Communications; advises and recommends best practices, gathers functional requirements, and develops websites and digital solutions in support of departmental and college-wide projects.
  • Collaborates with Information Technology and other technology teams to create enterprise online properties for various platforms.
  • Recommends, plans, and implements code and design optimizations to improve the scalability of the applications and maximize performance.
  • Writes documentation for projects and internal processes as they relate to web development and maintenance.
  • Leads special projects which include the planning and design of the technical, functional, visual and interactive components of VCC's websites, microsites, and web applications (i.e. implement the website architecture for a new CMS (Content Management System).
  • Creates and maintains the College's Git source code and change management processes for VCC's websites.
  • Coordinates software updates with CMS vendors and performs testing and quality assurance to ensure business continuity with VCC's websites.
  • Implements accessibility standards to VCC's websites.
  • Developing websites for digital marketing campaigns and communications initiatives.
  • Conducts testing and quality assurance, and troubleshoots various digital marketing and communications channels.
  • Trains non-technical users on managing and editing website content.
  • Performs other related duties as required.

Qualifications

Education and Experience

  • 3-year college diploma in web development, computer science, or related discipline.
  • Over 5 years' related experience in developing, maintaining, and supporting complex websites and content management systems.

Skills and Abilities

Technical Skills:

  • Strong proficiency in HTML, CSS, JavaScript, PHP, responsive design, and cross-browser/platform compatibility.
  • Extensive proficiency with WordPress, Drupal, and other popular CMS tools with an expectation of continued proficiency development in new and changing tools in the market.
  • Experience with the full website design and development lifecycle, from requirements gathering, building prototypes, developing (including but not limited to front-end and UX/UI development), testing, and final delivery.
  • Experience with Windows Server.
  • Experience working in a LAMP stack and open-source technologies.
  • Experience with Git/GitHub version control software.
  • Knowledge of performance and SEO optimizations.
  • Strong knowledge of W3C web standards.
  • Working knowledge of Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2.0 standards strongly preferred.
  • Excellent troubleshooting and problem-solving skills with little supervision.
  • Knowledge of Usability and User Experience principles are an asset.
  • Strong knowledge of browser developer tools for testing and debugging.
  • Experience with HTML frameworks, such as Bootstrap.
  • Experience with JS frameworks and libraries, such as ReactJS.
  • Knowledge of Web Performance Optimization (WPO) techniques.
  • Knowledge of RESTful services and APIs.

Soft Skills:

  • Ability to organize and manage multiple priorities, while maintaining a professional and positive demeanour.
  • Strong communication skills (both verbal and written). The position works with all areas of the College; strong interpersonal skills and the capacity to work well with others is essential.
  • Demonstrated willingness to learn and continually upgrades skills.
  • Ability to train non-technical users on how to effectively and efficiently use content management and other related systems.

Salary Range - Prorated based on FTE

PAYGRADE 27 - $2,267.96 to $2,660.40 bi-weekly.
