The Opportunity

With an emphasis on traditional media, followed by social media and web content creation, we are hiring a Senior Communications Specialist. To be a fit for this role, you are a seasoned communications professional, a strategic and data-driven thinker with an equally strong background in leveraging traditional media and social media to share content and tell stories. The role is responsible for executing our proactive media outreach strategy and supporting social media activities and responses for SAIT.

The successful candidate is a collaborative, self-motivated and creative doer who loves storytelling while building and fostering relationships in and outside of the organization. As a solid writer, you can identify the appropriate channel, with the help of analytics, to tell a story with the strongest spokesperson or expert. Whether it's through a pitch, media release or Instagram reel, you understand the value of squeezing every drop from a piece of content through various channels.

As a senior specialist, you aren't afraid to pick up the phone and build relationships from the ground up while exploring story ideas. Your demonstrated success in creating first-class communications plans, that exceed targets, will inspire others and support the achievement of SAIT's priorities as well as enhance SAIT's brand.

So you know ... this position is a permanent fulltime role and reports to the Strategic External Content Team Lead. Oh, and also, the team is currently participating in SAIT's hybrid work pilot and combining working from home with working on our beautiful campus.

The Role

  • As an experienced communicator, the successful candidate's duties will include:

Media relations:

  • Strategically pitch SAIT news to media to garner positive proactive stories
  • Respond to general media inquiries
  • Create key messages and reactive statements
  • Create effective media releases
  • Coordinate and coach subject matter experts for interviews
  • Build and maintain SAIT's roster of media experts
  • Media liaison at on-site events/announcements
  • Provide media interviews as a general spokesperson as required

Social media and content creation:

  • Post, schedule and leverage content on various platforms
  • Create graphics, gifs, contests, live event coverage and hosting
  • Reactive/customer service - timely respond to questions on SAIT social sites, as well as external sites

Champion and exercise collaboration within the department and across campus to facilitate and maximize effective content sharing, engagement and best practices

  • Support and provide back up to entire team as required
  • Abide by and support all health and safety responsibilities
  • Follow and champion SAIT's brand, style and social media guidelines
  • Assist with the promotion and development of innovative and new communication processes, strategies, tactics and products
  • Abide by and support all Health and Safety responsibilities

QUALIFICATIONS & EXPERIENCE

  • Degree or certificate in Communications, Public Relations, Journalism or related fields
  • Five to 10 years of progressive experience in communications with a focus on media engagement, social media and content delivery
  • In-depth working knowledge and experience with platforms and tools including Sprout Social, Google Analytics and Canva.
  • Strong service attitude
  • Creative and strategic thinker with sound judgement
  • Detail-oriented, ability to project manage, make decisions and meet deadlines in a fast-paced and evolving environment
  • Strong interpersonal skills and able to work effectively with a variety of stakeholders
  • Exceptional proofreading/editing skills
  • Must be able to effectively manage competing priorities
  • Ability to work evenings and weekends

Salary range: $80,000 - $83,500
