Position summary

As a Graphic Designer, you will partner with copywriters and other designers to support the creation of memorable, effective, on-brand creative that breaks through and delivers. You will work on a range of projects across all media, digital and traditional-from concept to production-ensuring a high-quality aesthetic that adheres to our graphic standards. With your 5+ years of agency or related marketing experience, you have an exceptional eye for detail, valuing quality, consistency, accessibility and relevance. You obsess about all the expected things-typography, grids, the battle for whitespace-but you also know how to balance beautiful work with brand consistency.

Reporting to the Creative Director, you can expect to be part of a skilled creative department staffed with art directors, graphic designers, copywriters, videographers, motion designers and more. This is new at the U of A, so you should also expect a veritable whirlwind of learning, growing, creating, and supporting each other on our collective journey to ?build the university of tomorrow.?

Duties

  • Effectively interpret creative briefs to best guide design direction.
  • Deliver traditional and digital design that is high-quality and on-brand for the audience
  • Collaborate with copywriters and other members of the creative department to refine creative solutions to business problems and opportunities
  • Communicate rationale for your solutions, and action on feedback
  • Work from concept to completion across all mediums and exceptionally skilled in the areas of typography, colour theory, structure and space
  • Keep apprised of current design and communication trends by:
  • reading relevant publications and magazines
  • Attending seminars/courses
  • Learning new software as required
  • Work with the team to determine scope, deadlines, and budgets for complex projects.
  • Produce mockups for proofing that accurately reflect the finished product.
  • Ensure creative concepts reproduce effectively in the required medium.
  • Work with vendors to ensure efficient production of collateral material.
  • Update annual reports and marketing collateral
  • Uses excellent communication skills working with the project team to ensure the goals outlined in the creative brief are met.
  • Understands and respects the subtleties and sensitivities of marketing and communications in complex and decentralized organizations.
  • Takes responsibility and is held accountable for design aspects of project work.
  • Participates in appropriate committee meetings and task forces.
  • Monitor design and creative projects through Workfront (our job management system) from initial assignment to completion.
  • Maintain working files on shared drives, including sketches, conceptual work, signed proofs, correspondence etc.
  • Archive completed jobs to ensure files are available for future use.
  • Maintain records of production costs for future reference.

Minimum Qualifications

  • BDES, specializing in Visual Communication Design (4 year program), MFA, Mdes or a combination of relevant training & experience demonstrated through portfolio review and job history.
  • Minimum 5 years of marketing and advertising design experience (preferably at an agency) with a thoughtful portfolio of creative and engaging work that demonstrates your ability.
  • Demonstrated expertise in working in creative or communications teams.
  • End-to-end working knowledge of the print process
  • Fluent in Adobe CC, Google Worksuite.
  • Experience in the Agile method preferred but not required
