Do you have a Computer Science or software development background? Are you skilled at conducting task analysis from a software engineer's point of view? Do you have a talent for understanding complex technology and distilling it into instructions and reference material that helps engineers get their jobs done?
If you do, consider a career as a Senior Technical Writer supporting the Siemens suite of Kubernetes-based software development tools.
As a Senior Technical Writer for Xcelerator Developer Experience (XDE), your role is to develop the technical documentation for an in-house development environment that serve thousands of software engineers working across dozens of product divisions.
As one of the lead technical writers, you will have direct access to the technical architects of these in-house tools and will be considered a member of the development team. You will also have direct access to the users of XDE, providing an accessible resource to gauge the effectiveness of the documentation you develop.
There are multiple product divisions across Siemens Industry Software, from CAD/CAM software tools (NX), to Product Lifecycle Management software solutions (Teamcenter), to simulation and test applications (Simcenter).
These product divisions are tasked with evolving their existing product deliverables to exploit the full power of cloud computing.
To support this endeavor, Siemens is significantly overhauling and expanding the development platforms to enable Kubernetes-based development and delivery.
To help its customers achieve digital transformation, Siemens is evolving its own development operations to support cloud computing.
The software engineers across all product divisions will need stellar documentation to successfully adopt these new development platforms, and that's where you enter the picture as a technical writer.
Xcelerator Developer Experience (XDE) provides software engineering teams with a development environment that addresses many of the non-functional requirements of cloud-native applications.
The target audience is software engineers who are developing cloud-native applications in public or private clouds, containerized applications in public and private clouds, or engineering enterprise software that is deployable through containers.
XDE is specifically designed to address such key technology areas as security, networking, DNS, certificate management, persistent storage, secrets management, and CI/CD (Continuous Integration / Continuous Deployment).
By providing standardized mechanisms to address these fundamental aspects of cloud-native solutions, the product teams can focus on their areas of domain expertise.
Key Job Responsibilities
- Conducting audience analysis and researching user tasks
- Experimenting with the product and developing example applications
- Developing documentation plans that specify the topics that will meet user needs
- Organizing topics into maps for user-friendly navigation of content
- Developing drafts of topics and routing drafts to SMEs for technical review
- Consulting technical experts to ensure technical accuracy of the documentation
- Ensuring content accuracy and relevancy and publishing documentation deliverables
- Interviewing users to verify the effectiveness of the documentation
As a technical writer at Siemens, you will be supported by a central organization that provides authoring and publication tools, templates, and platforms, including a world-class CCMS with Oxygen Web Author. You will author topics and build maps using the DITA standard (or, in Markdown, using ?DITA-like? templates), with an established framework of content models and styles.
- BS degree in a technical discipline (such as Computer Science, Computer Engineering) or commensurate experience
- Expertise with developing DITA topics: concepts, tasks, reference, and troubleshooting
- Self-motivation and self-direction to research challenging technical questions
- Experience with Kubernetes platforms (for example, AWS EKS)
- Experience with developing applications in Python, Java, Go, or other programming languages
- Familiarity with GitLab, GitOps, and other DevOps platforms
- Effective interpersonal skills and communications skills
- Demonstrated ability to adapt to new technologies and learn quickly
- Proven project management experience
If you are committed to serving internal customers with stellar documentation, consider joining our team by submitting your resume.
Candidates with no history of a technical writing role, but with domain knowledge and engineering skills in the cloud computing space, will be considered. Please consider applying if you have strong technical skills or software engineering experience and wish to pursue a career in technical writing.
