Job Description:

Reporting to the Vice President, Strategy, Communications and Stakeholder Relations, the Director Corporate Communications drives the strategic direction, development, implementation and evaluation of RVH's innovative communications and stakeholder engagement strategies, plans, services and products, ensuring they are aligned with RVH's MY CARE strategic priorities, goals and brand.

This highly skilled, experienced and strategic individual will oversee the development of all relevant communication plans, tools, tactics and products while engaging a variety of stakeholders, including employees, medical staff, the public, communities, government, and the media. This includes development of strategies for internal and external communications, crisis and issues management, media relations, special projects, event management, and social/digital media.

The Director is also responsible for the day-to-day direction and management of communication staff. They also play a key role in protecting and enhancing the reputation of RVH in the province and managing its risk. An effective communication, engagement and government relations strategy is especially important as RVH seeks approval for its ambitious expansion project which will see its current facility double in size while developing a new South Campus in Innisfil.

The Director will act as delegate in the Vice President's absence, providing support and counsel to the CEO and Senior Leadership Team.


  • University or College degree/diploma in communications, public relations, journalism or related field


  • At least 10 years progressive experience in communications/ public relations
  • At least five years leadership experience
  • Healthcare communication experience preferred
  • Demonstrated experience in strategic communication, media relations, published works


  • Expert level communication skills including, writing, editing, presenting and articulating messages
  • Extensive knowledge of communication principles and best practices, including evaluation methodologies

  • Highly proficient in a computerized setting utilizing desktop publishing and a variety of communication tools, particularly Microsoft Word, Publisher, Excel and PowerPoint
  • Good understanding of communication technology, including photography, videography, editing, social/digital media, web/HTML
  • Able to meet or exceed frequent deadlines in a multi-tasking, fast-changing environment
  • Budgeting skills and sound business judgment


  • Develop an annual communication and engagement strategy that targets all audiences and stakeholders to advance RVH's reputation as a healthcare leader, while maintaining a strong public presence and positive brand awareness.

  • Monitor and evaluate the success and ROI of RVH's communication and engagement strategy using relevant analytics, key performance indicators and industry insights
  • Determine annual budgets in the context of the organization's broader budget, monitor budget and take corrective action, as needed.
  • Monitor and assess emerging issues. Develop crisis/issues management strategies and materials including briefing notes, key messages, leader toolkits and communication plans.
  • Utilizing best practices, proactively develop, edit and oversee execution of a wide variety of internal and external communication products, plans and services, , including, newsletters, brochures, posters, memos, news releases, presentations, web and social media content, advertising, video scripts, briefing notes, key messages, Town Halls, and speeches etc.
  • Develop, oversee and evaluate proactive media strategy (traditional and social) overseeing all content and assets. Identify, coordinate with, prepare and coach spokespeople, evaluating results.
  • Develop and maintain positive and productive relationships with partner organizations, government representatives and media, locally and provincially.
  • Seek out opportunities for community and partner consultation. Track and analyze information gathered through community engagement, identifying key themes and priorities, and make recommendations for improvement.
  • Provide strategic communication leadership, advice and support to RVH programs, services and committees.
  • Support the Vice President in executing RVH's government relations strategies.
  • Direct development and execution of special events and projects to ensure they advance RVH's strategy and priorities.
  • Design strategies to promote all hospital programs and services to numerous target markets.
  • Develop and lead RVH's digital strategy including overseeing maintenance, training and updates to website.
  • Review and approve all external-facing documents and assets for compliance with brand standards and guidelines.
  • Liaise with the RVH Foundation to develop and align its communication strategy, building awareness of the hospital's needs, while leveraging the value of the hospital's brand.
  • Lead recruitment, selection and hiring of staff as required.
  • Identify and promote factors that contribute to a positive, effective working environment.
  • Oversee day-to-day management of staff, including payroll, sick time management, vacation requests.
  • Monitor, identify and address performance concerns. Provide regular feedback and coaching to staff. Promote an environment supporting continuous development and improvement.
