The Role

The Marketing and Communications Manager will report to the Vice-President, External Relations, with functional oversight by the Brand and Marketing Strategist.

The Marketing and Communications Manager is the lead storyteller, a public relations and communications professional. The lead communicator for the institution. The manager is responsible to ensure the presentation, and maintenance of a positive, innovative, responsive, and dynamic institutional public image is strengthened. This position will create and implement communication strategies that influence the perception and opinions of current and potential students, parents, industry, and the broader community.

This position has a supervisory role and leads an in-house team of communication specialists, and a back-up to the Brand and Marketing Strategist.

Key responsibilities will be:

  • Develop, implement, and manage Northwestern Polytechnic's communications programs, tools, and initiatives. Acts as a liaison and connector with other NWP staff.
  • Develop a comprehensive and progressive approach to digital communications through website development and content, social media and emerging digital opportunities.
  • Demonstrate leadership and creative solutions that build on communication and marketing programs that utilize a variety of communication platforms.
  • Responsible for leading and coordinating all media events.
  • Works closely with the Brand and Marketing Strategist to identify priorities and strategies to enhance and support NWP initiatives, and build brand awareness.
  • Support marketing opportunities and provides leadership in integrating initiatives with the Polytechnic's branding and marketing strategy.
  • Lead the implementation and maintenance of visual identity standards for us by internal and external audiences including suppliers, and freelance consultants/contractors.
  • Identify emerging trends and changing sentiments that impact communication and internal/external engagement.
  • Implement reporting structures, and provide regular reporting to the Vice-President, External Relations.
  • Track brand associations relative to competitors to identify the impact of communications, marketing activities, and perceptions.
  • Develop a network of media contacts and remain up-to-date on news related to the system, the region, students, labour market trends, etc.
  • Provides direct supervision to the Marketing and Communications team that supports the aspirational goal and strategic direction of the institution, and in alignment with relevant Collective Agreements.
  • Provide strategic advice and sign-off for digital content design and development, social media and digital branding, print material development, and electronic communications.
  • Manage Communications budget.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Job Requirements

The successful candidate will have a bachelor's degree in Communications, Journalism, or Public Relations with a minimum of two years directly related job experience including editing and proofreading, strategic digital communication, and social media.

Necessary skills and attributes to be successful in this role include:

  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office applications such as Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Outlook.
  • Strong organizational and multi-tasking skills.
  • An entrepreneurial spirit, specifically one who is willing to take a risk to create opportunities.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to build strong relationships across the organization.
  • A high level of integrity, professionalism and accountability.
  • Experience in leading staff and volunteers, communications, marketing and project management.
  • Membership with the International Association of Business Communicators (IABC), Canadian Public Relations Society (CPRS) or Canadian Marketing Association (CMA) considered an asset.
