Job Description Summary

The Director, Communications and Marketing (C&M) is responsible for conceptualizing and leading implementation of a strategic, results-driven communication and marketing program that supports the business objectives of Student Housing and Community Services (SHCS), while ensuring the strategy aligns with the goals and protocols of the VP Students portfolio and the University. The Director leads long-term planning and provides strategic oversight for the communications and marketing programs that support SHCS s four areas of operations, and is responsible for managing the quality and integration of communications and marketing efforts across the SHCS portfolio. The Director engages the SHCS senior leadership team and other key stakeholders in the development and evaluation of the SHCS communications and marketing strategy, and provides advice on communication with students, faculty, staff, and the broader campus community.

The Director, C&M is responsible for brand development and management including ensuring all print materials, online content and communications channels are consistent, effectively deliver key messages and build the SHCS brand identity

Organizational Status

The Director, Communications & Marketing is a member of the SHCS senior leadership team, and is a key advisor on issues related to communications and marketing. The position co-reports to the Managing Director, SHCS and the Senior Director, VPS Communications. The Director works closely with the Director, Residence Life & Administration, the Director, Food Services, and the General Manager, Conferences & Accommodations. This position also works closely with the Senior Director, VPS Communications and other communications professionals within the VP, Students portfolio and across the University. The Director is also responsible for leading of team of communications professionals that is proactive and innovative in how we communicate with and engage key target audiences.

Work Performed

Develops and implements an integrated, multi business unit, multi-channel communications and social media strategic plan to support the short- and long-term goals and objectives of SHCS and the areas of operation within the portfolio.

Provides vision and ongoing leadership for the SHCS strategic communications strategy including managing an annual communications planning cycle and measuring the effectiveness of channels, strategies and tactics.

Manages the day-to-day operations of the communications and marketing programs across the SHCS portfolio with a focus on ensuring all communications and marketing efforts align with identified goals and meet quality standards consistent with the SHCS brand.

Provides key Business Unit managers with strategic guidance on development of marketing and communications strategies that contribute to student and customer engagement goals.

Presents proven and emerging communications channel options and makes recommendations to the Managing Director, Directors and unit Managers on selection of strategies to meet audience needs and maximize use of resources.

Assesses the effectiveness of established communications and marketing plans, continually refines and improves these plans to meet the evolving needs of the department and audience. Develops a strategy for an active, innovative and effective digital and social media marketing strategy that meets both business goals and user needs.

Directs development of policies and guidelines for involving students and staff in contributing meaningful content for social media channels.

Leads adoption of new technologies to support core communications objectives and to respond to changing circumstances and emerging priorities.

Collaborates with peer UBC communication and marketing colleagues to investigate and test up-and-coming communications channels.

Provides strategic oversight for the design, development and content strategy for key SHCS web properties to ensure consistency and adherence to overall communications strategy.

Provides strategic, creative and content oversight for the visual identity of all areas of SHCS; monitors output to ensure consistent use.

Implements a print strategy to support the business objectives and goals of all areas of SHCS.

Serves as a customer service advisor to the SHCS leadership team, reporting on customer service ideas, initiatives and issues, and providing input on organization-wide strategies and policies that have customer service implications.

Provides project oversight for student and other customer facing communication, branding and marketing projects, ensuring project timelines and budgets are met, and appropriate contingency plans have been developed to keep projects on track.

Determines need for external marketing / communications consultants or agencies, engaging them only when in-house expertise is unavailable.

Responsible for ensuring plans are driven by market research and data analysis, and assesses marketing and communications initiatives for results and effectiveness, refining strategies or re-directing resources and making changes as required.

Actively seeks out partnerships and develops relationships with other VPS and University units to identify and leverage opportunities for collaboration.

Functions as a communications expert for all areas of SHCS and provides communications expertise in all SHCS projects, sharing expertise and developing intuitive and easy to use materials that allow unit staff to handle some communications tasks independently.

Facilitates training and professional development for SHCS staff who are responsible for communications with students and other customers.

Responsible for the overall operations of the SHCS Communications & Marketing team including organizational structure and staffing compliment, in consultation with the Managing Director, SHCS and the Sr. Director, VPS Communications.

Develops the annual SHCS communications and marketing operational budget plan.

Consequence of Error/Judgement

The work and decisions of the Director, Marketing and Communications have a direct and critical impact on the reputation, effective operation and financial viability of Student Housing and Community Services. Poor decisions or judgement will result in damage to SHCS and the University s reputation with students, staff, faculty and the broader community. Incorrect decisions will affect the University s ability to effectively communicate with its audiences, with a direct negative impact on the student experience and the department s business objectives.

Supervision Received

Works with considerable latitude within a broad management plan under the guidance of the Managing Director, SHCS and Senior Director, VPS Communications. Work is reviewed in terms of achievement of long-term goals.

Supervision Given

Manages four communications staff. Responsible for supervising the work of external communication and marketing service consultants.

Preferred Qualifications

Undergraduate degree in a relevant discipline.A minimum of 8 years of experience or the equivalent combination of education and experience.Proven experience in strategic communications planning and project management

Strong working knowledge of retail merchandising and marketing concepts with a history of responsibility for financial results. Familiarity and experience working with advertising.

Experience using established and emerging social media channels for communication and audience engagement.

Demonstrated understanding of web design and usability best practices. Demonstrated experience in web content development including writing for the web, search engine optimization and digital asset integration

Accuracy and attention to detail. Effective oral and written communication and interpersonal, presentation, and public relations skills. Demonstrated leadership, motivational and supervision skills.

Strong analytical skills and ability to use analytical tools, eg: Google Analytics, to measure success and deliver actionable recommendations.

Ability to plan and implement a broad range of digital and non-digital communication and marketing projects

Demonstrated ability to function as a member of a team. Ability to exercise diplomacy, tact and discretion when working with confidential and/or sensitive information and in dealing wit various levels of administration and external agencies.
