The Reach Alliance, founded in 2015 at the University of Toronto's Munk School of Global Affairs & Public Policy, in partnership with the Mastercard Center for Inclusive Growth, was inspired by the United Nations' Sustainable Development Goals. Reach is a student-driven, faculty-mentored research and leadership initiative examining how critical interventions and innovations reach those who are the hardest to reach: those living in extreme poverty, the geographically remote, administratively invisible and marginalized. Since it began, 131 undergraduate and graduate students have participated in Reach and published 23 case studies on innovative programs in 16 countries. In 2021, the Alliance expanded to include researchers at the University of Oxford,

University College London and Tecnológico de Monterrey. Reach alumni have secured positions in prominent public and private sector organizations such as McKinsey, Global Affairs Canada, Grand Challenges Canada, the United Nations and the SickKids Centre for Global Child Health.

Your opportunity:

In partnership with the Mastercard Center for Inclusive Growth, the Reach Alliance is scaling the Reach approach to six leading universities by 2022.

Reporting to the Munk School's Director, Strategic Communications & Public Engagement under the supervision of the Reach Alliance's Partnership Development Lead, the Reach Alliance Communications & Events Officer will responsible for developing and implementing communications plans that support strategic objectives, producing promotional and outreach materials, and conceptualizing, organizing and executing event activities. In this role, the Communications & Events Officer will collaborate with Reach Alliance staff, student researchers, faculty mentors, partner academic institutions and external stakeholders to generate content and to grow the Reach Alliance brand. They will support outreach with partner institutions, funders and stakeholders in Canada and internationally.

Your responsibilities will include:

Developing and implementing communication plans that support strategic objectives

  • Advising clients on marketing and advertising strategies for multimedia channels
  • Researching and identifying opportunities to promote programs and initiatives
  • Producing promotional and outreach materials
  • Conceptualizing, organizing and executing event activities
  • Liaising with staff and vendors to ensure logistics are carried out according to the event plan
  • Promoting events and programs to target audiences
  • Researching potential target markets for outreach collaborations

Essential Qualifications:

Bachelor's degree in social sciences, public health, journalism or communications, or an acceptable combination of relevant experience

  • Minimum four years of experience in media, communications, advertising/public relations with national and international multidisciplinary teams, partners, and stakeholders in Canada and low/middle-income countries
  • Experience working with or coordinating across different stakeholder groups, including the private sector, public sector, civil society and universities
  • Experience implementing communication plans across a broad range of marketing/communication channels, with a proven track record in developing, implementing and measuring multi-channel communications strategies
  • Experience working on issues related to the Sustainable Development Goals and/or reaching marginalized populations
  • Experienced and highly skilled at writing, editing and producing materials for publication (print and digital)
  • Experience with managing website and social media channels (eg. Twitter, Facebook, Instagram, LinkedIn, YouTube) for institutions / branded accounts
  • Experience conceptualizing, organizing and executing large-scale event activities, including promoting / marketing events to target audiences and managing the event budget
  • Experience researching and engaging potential target markets for outreach collaborations
  • Experience using content management systems for website management (eg. WordPress)
  • Experience liaising with vendors/freelancers/consultants
  • Proven track record in developing, implementing and measuring multi-channel communications strategies
  • Excellent English writing and communication skills, including experience in editing, reviewing and communicating academic work to the general public
  • Ability to work independently, prioritize key tasks, deliver to timelines and take initiative
  • Strong knowledge of and commitment to the university's equity principles
  • Proficiency using Canva and/or Adobe Creative Suite (Photoshop, InDesign, Illustrator, Premiere/Rush)
  • Advanced proficiency using of Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint required
  • Advanced proficiency using project management tools (eg. Trello)
  • Ability to create reports using Google Analytics and other reporting tools

Assets (Nonessential):

Master's degree preferred

  • Knowledge of the Sustainable Development Goals
  • Experience using Google AdWords and related tools
  • Experience promoting / marketing events to target audiences
  • Experience with graphic design and video production
  • Fluency in a language other than English (eg. Spanish, French, etc)
