Reporting to the Executive Vice-President, Business Development & Marketing, the person in this role is responsible for delivering strategic external communications including corporate information as well as marketing information.


  • Develop and ensure the corporate communication strategy is consistent and reflects the organization’s business strategy; 
  • Work in partnership with regulatory, compliance and other functions to continually assess and set standards for product, pipeline and disease awareness communications while mitigating risk, ensure consistency of content, edit and revise content as necessary;
  • Develop the messaging specifically adapted for specific stakeholders in collaboration with the appropriate departments and within the US, Canadian and European laws, rules and regulation governing the pharmaceutical industry;
  • Develop/strengthen the relationships with a wide variety of external organizations and professionals, media and other influential organizations including government and government agencies;
  • Provide communications counsel to the President and CEO and the senior management team;
  • Prepare communication materials, including, but not limited to, key messages, Q&A, corporate press releases and company presentations;
  • Implement social media strategies and manage relationships with media outlets;
  • Develop, track and report on metrics as they relate to the impact of Medicago’s communications on the commercial market and stakeholders;
  • Conduct competitive intelligence gathering of competitors and media networks and report information to the appropriate department;
  • Work with marketing and regulatory to ensure advertising campaigns are in line with the company's image and goals and in compliance with promotional regulations;
  • Coordinate media interaction with the company’s spokesperson and opinion leader spokespeople as appropriate. Must have the ability to act as a effecacious corporate spokesperson;
  • Manage the relation with designated consultants in external relation;
  • Advocate on behalf of the company brand with external stakeholders and the media across all communications channels and vehicles;  
  • Document Medicago presence at events, conferences, and speaking engagements;
  • Represents external affairs within the organization as part of the cross functional team;
  • Maintain up to date the necessary understanding of the regulatory framework in the market;
  • Provide and prepare input to the budgeting, accounting, planning, reporting and evaluation initiatives and processes of assigned projects and initiatives.


  • 10+ years’ experience in corporate and external communication, in the life sciences/healthcare industry;
  • Undergraduate degree in communications, life science journalism, public health, and/or business management;
  • Ability to understand and accurately communicate complex science, pharmaceutical and healthcare topics;
  • Demonstrated experience in product communications, disease education and awareness, issues management, public relations media and advocacy;
  • Good knowledge of principles, laws and regulations related to the pharmaceutical industry;
  • Excellent verbal, written and interpersonal communication skills in both English and French;
  • Experience in managing multiple projects simultaneously; adaptable and capable of managing within a rapidly changing environment;
  • Ability to interact with senior management and high-profile experts appropriately, with confidence and ease;
  • Current knowledge of media relations and systems with sound media judgment;
  • Ability to give formal presentations to internal and external audiences of various sizes.
